International students planning to study in France must obtain admission to a recognised higher-education institution and apply for the appropriate student visa before travelling. Students from certain countries may also need to complete the Études en France procedure through Campus France before submitting their visa application.
Non-EU, non-EEA, and non-Swiss students usually studying in France for more than 90 days need a long-stay student visa known as the VLS-TS étudiant. This visa is generally valid for four to twelve months and functions as a residence permit after it has been validated.
France offers a wide range of internationally recognised higher-education institutions, including public universities, Grandes Écoles, business schools, engineering schools, art and architecture schools, and specialised professional institutions. There are more than 3,500 public and private higher-education institutions across the country.
Students can pursue Bachelor’s, Master’s, and doctoral degrees, commonly known in France as the Licence, Master, and Doctorat. A Licence generally represents three years and 180 ECTS credits, while a Master typically adds two years and 120 ECTS credits.
